Sweet corn fields

we have about 15 acres of sweet corn

Fall harvest is our favorite time of the year because our labor and planning is coming to completion. Why is Sage-Grown sweet corn the best sweet corn? Because its harvested daily, by hand to be sure we slect ears that are ripe and flavorful. All Sweet Corn varieties can taste good but most have a narrow harvest window to get the flavor and tenderness we enjoy. We continue to test varieties every year. Our primiary varieties are Providence, and SageGold.

Bicolor Sweet Corn

Traditionally Bicolor Sweet Corn is known to be best for eating because fieldcorn is none to be all yellow. This is not technically true. The new supper sweet and other controled cross hybrid varieties can be extremly flavorful and tender and white or yellow as well as BiColor. We grow about 6 varieties and this way we can always have at least one perfect for harvest. It would not be possible to have a single variety perfect for harvest daily. Each variety ripens at a different day length so we can plant about once a week with 4-6 varieties and this makes it possible to pick at least one fresh every day.

is sweet corn geneticly modified

We do not grow Geneticly Modified Sweet Corn or any other GMO crops. Hybid sweet corn varieties are not GMO. They are still grown outside and requires the planting of two known varieties in close proximity of one another. Hybrids are Controled Crosses that will revert back to a traditional, normally undesired corn if planted the next year. Hybrids are normally several generations away for their beginning with another cross each generation to get the desired outcome of genes expressed inthe final seed. One variety is selected for the pollen and is allowed to pollenate the other variety that has had its tassles removed to ensure only the first can donate its pollen. Nature does it however there are several generations of controled breeding to get to the hybrid seed. This seed cost more because littereally the seed was grown and cross pollenated several times to get the seed to be as it is. The breeders know which varieties to use to get to their desired variety consistenly. This means if you plant the seed it will not be the same variety. If you want a stable seed variety there are some out there but they do not have the sweetness and tenderness we have learned to enjoy.

We pick dozens

We use these bins to haul the sweet corn from the field to the cooler and market. We also sell directly from them. You may see several bins half full on a busy day and we often cobine them together if they are the same variety. Each bin only holds about 35 dozen sweet corn. We start each morning picking 2 bins and on the weekends 5 -7.

Sage-Grown

We grow what we like to eat. A variety of fruits is always fun but having a new variety of your favorite fruit is better. We pick our corn daily first thing in the morning so it is always fresh.
